Viscerosomatic Disease

Painful periods, chronic pelvic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, interstitial cystitis, bowel issues, bladder disturbances, gynecologic and sexual problems, and infertility are certainly common but are not normal. Spinal nerves supply messages from the brain and spinal cord to these areas of the body. Chiropractic care can help to treat these conditions by decompressing compressed nerves in the spine.

Viscerosomatic Conditions Potentially Helped with Chiropractic Care Include:

  • Pelvic Pain and Organic Dysfunction

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

  • Interstitial Cystitis

Pelvic Pain and Organic Dysfunction (PPOD)

Discovered by Dr. James Browning, the Pelvic Pain and Organic Dysfunction syndrome is a very common condition that is unfortunately frequently misdiagnosed. PPOD syndrome is a mechanical disorder of the spine that can cause a wide range of symptoms including chronic pelvic pain and various disturbances of pelvic organ function. PPOD syndrome presents differently for different patients. In some patients, the primary complaints may be limited to pain at one or more regions of the pelvis, rectum, or genital areas, while in other PPOD syndrome patients, the symptoms can be much more extensive and severe, and include widespread pelvic pain and disturbances of bladder, bowel, gynecologic, and sexual function. Dr. Tenckhoff uses flexion-distraction manipulation to  manage the underlying mechanical disorder of the spine that causes PPOD syndrome.

Interstitial Cystitis (IC)

Interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition that causes bladder pressure, bladder pain, and sometimes pelvic pain. The pain ranges from mild discomfort to severe pain. The condition is a part of a spectrum of diseases known as painful bladder syndrome. Research suggests that interstitial cystitis is linked with nerve inflammation. A study by Gillespie et al  found that decompressing the L5 nerve root (surgically) relieves interstitial cystitis pain. Cox Technic Flexion Distraction and Decompression may be a gentle, non-surgical way to decompress the nerve and relieve pain. Dr. Tenckhoff has successfully treated numerous IC patients with the help of pelvic physical therapists and medical doctors.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome is a group of symptoms that occur together, including repeated pain in your abdomen and changes in your bowel movements, which may be diarrhea, constipation, or both. The lumbar and sacral nerves that originate from the low back supply the large intestine and colon with nerve supply. Patients with irritable bowel syndrome is often find relief with spinal manipulation of the low back. Cox Technic may be used to gently treat these conditions by decompressing the nerves, opening the spinal canal space, decreasing intradiscal pressures, and realigning spinal segments.
